The Sponge Mushroom

This is a mushroom. I found this photo on Flickr. My stepdad loves to eat these kind of sponge mushroom. I have never tried these kind before. But my mom and I love to go hunting for them. This year we only found about five of them. They are really hard to find because they are surrounded by brown leaves and they are kind of brown so it kind of blends in with the leaves. And when we walk through woods I always wonder how many we have passed while walking. But if you every want to eat these make sure you soak them in salt water because they are full of bugs and dirt and the salt gets all of the stuff in them. But I don't plan on ever trying them.

  1. They look nasty to eat, but they look like the sponges you find in the ocean.

  2. Oh, my goodness! I love these things! When I was little I used to help my dad find bags full of these sponge mushrooms and then we'd have a feast at home. Sadly, I haven't had any for years but I still remember them and wish I had a bunch of them for supper. You're right, though, you have to soak them in salt water or you get a little extra seasoning!
